Our mission was simple: a getaway from it all—a girls’ trip to rejuvenate, reconnect with one another and disconnect from life.

We stumbled upon Cottage in the Clouds, an enchanting off-grid retreat nestled high in the mountains. Located in the heart of the Lake District National Park, this cottage is renowned as one of the most remote homes in England and with views like these, we were so pleased they’d decided to open it up to us.

Thanks to the dedicated restoration efforts of Grizedale Arts and the National Trust, the old stone cottage has maintained its rustic charm. It leans gracefully into the surrounding hills, filled with artifacts that tell its storied past. Inside, you’ll find antique water jugs and low beams that invite you to duck under them. The cozy atmosphere is completed by the copper kettle boiling on the range, perfect for a tin bath by the wood burner—this is rustic living at its finest.

Without mains electricity or plumbing, the cottage experience is made extra special by wood burners, candlelight, and a loo with a view. There is a gas bottle fuelled hob, but no oven, so I opted to pre-batch four meals, vacuum pack them and brought along two high quality boxes of wine (yes, they do exist, and I have recommendations for you!). For breakfast, my trusty moka pot and a bag of ground coffee, along with butter, eggs, bread, and bacon sourced from the owners’ farm, provided everything we needed each morning.

Once you settle in, you’ll be left entirely to yourselves, occasionally greeted by curious cows or sheep grazing in the fields around you.

The journey to the cottage from Connistion or the little place where you park involves a mile long trek uphill from the car park, but don’t worry—the owners will gladly drive you up upon arrival and back down when your stay concludes. Returning from long walks, like the one we did up and over The Conniption Man, can feel like punishment if you’re not fit, but honestly made that well earned meal in the evening taste even better.
